Henrico, Virginia
Today, in response to the challenges presented by COVID-19, the Henrico County Board of Supervisors adopted an emergency ordinance enacting temporary freeze from penalties and interest on several major taxes. Now through August, Henrico businesses will not be charged with any penalties or interest on meals and hotel tax payments. In addition, for 60 days after the June 5 due date there will be no penalties or interest on machinery and tools, commercial and residential real estate, and personal property taxes for residents and businesses.
“COVID-19 has affected our community greatly, and we’re working hard to lessen the impact,” said Anthony J. Romanello, executive director of the Henrico Economic Development Authority. “The Board of Supervisor’s quick action to set aside penalties and interest is a major boost toward the viability and longevity of many of our local businesses. During this challenging time, as always, the Board is doing everything it can to nurture the type of pro-business climate that Henrico businesses need to thrive.”
Hotel and meals tax payments are still due on the 20th of each month, but penalties and interest will be forgiven through August 20, 2020. Machinery and tools, real estate, and personal property taxes are all due on June 5, 2020, but can be paid by August 5, 2020, without accruing penalties or interest.
“As Henrico County Manager John Vithoulkas stated in his message to the county earlier this week, we don’t want business owners to have to choose between paying an employee or paying a tax,” said Romanello. “This goes a long way toward helping out. When this is all over – and it will end – we want our businesses ready to bounce back even stronger and more successful than before.”
