Henrico is committed to building a greener, more resilient community. Public buildings are becoming more energy-efficient with initiatives like solar panel installations, while residents are supported through numerous programs and environmentally focused efforts. From planting trees to cleaning up local waterways, Henrico is taking meaningful steps to protect natural resources and ensure a sustainable future for all.

Taking Steps for the Planet

Henrico is committed to practical, forward-thinking actions that protect natural resources and improve daily life for residents. From clean energy upgrades and eco-friendly building standards to recycling and community programs that encourage conservation, these initiatives highlight a shared responsibility to care for the environment today and for generations to come.

Solar Solutions

Since 2019, Henrico has expanded the use of solar energy on schools, libraries, and other public buildings through innovative partnerships with private developers. These systems come at no upfront cost, reduce utility bills, and supply clean, renewable power—lowering the community’s carbon footprint while making sustainability visible in everyday life.

LEED-Certified Facilities

Henrico is setting a standard with public buildings that meet LEED certification, a national rating system for environmentally sustainable construction. These facilities focus on energy efficiency, water conservation, and sustainable materials, creating healthier, environmentally responsible spaces for the community.

Residential Recycling

Henrico helps residents reduce waste and conserve resources through convenient recycling services. In addition to 12 drop-off recycling centers, residential curbside pickup allows households to recycle plastics, paper, metals, and more with ease. In 2023, nearly 90,000 homes received new 95-gallon rolling carts through a partnership with the Central Virginia Waste Management Authority, intentionally expanding the program and making recycling even easier for the community.

A Community with H.E.A.R.T.

Henrico’s Environmental Action Resource Team (HEART) is a collaborative initiative uniting county agencies, schools, and community members to advance sustainability and environmental stewardship. HEART serves as a think tank for the county’s environmental initiatives, aiming to streamline programs and promote sustainability, preserve natural resources, and protect the environment.
